Rayon is one of the most common fabrics in Indian women's bottomwear — soft, breathable, and drapes beautifully. It's also one of the most misunderstood fabrics when it comes to washing. Get the care wrong and you'll deal with shrinkage, colour fade, or a fabric that loses its drape entirely. Here's how to actually care for it.
Washing
Hand wash in cold water whenever possible — rayon fibers weaken when wet, and the agitation of a machine wash (especially on regular cycles) can cause fraying, pilling, or stretching out of shape. If you must machine wash, use a gentle/delicate cycle, cold water, and place the garment inside a mesh laundry bag to reduce friction. Always wash rayon separately from rougher fabrics like denim, which can snag the softer fibers.
Avoid bleach entirely, even for whites. Bleach breaks down rayon's fiber structure and will visibly weaken the fabric over repeated washes, not just affect colour.
Detergent
Use a mild detergent, and skip fabric softener. Softeners leave a residue that dulls rayon's natural drape and sheen over time. A small amount of mild detergent, fully dissolved in water before the garment goes in, is enough.
Drying
Never tumble dry rayon on heat — this is the single biggest cause of shrinkage. Lay the garment flat on a clean towel, gently reshape it to its original dimensions, and let it air dry in shade. Direct sunlight can fade colour over time, especially on richer or darker shades. Rayon typically dries within 2–3 hours flat-dried in good airflow.
If you're short on space, hanging is acceptable for rayon tops, but for wide-leg palazzo-style bottoms, flat drying preserves the shape better — hanging can cause the fabric to stretch unevenly at the waistband under its own weight while wet.
Ironing
Iron on low heat, ideally while the fabric is still very slightly damp. If it's fully dry, use a pressing cloth between the iron and the fabric to avoid a shiny or scorched patch — rayon is more heat-sensitive than cotton.
Storage
Fold rather than hang for long-term storage, particularly for wide-leg styles like palazzos — hanging for extended periods can cause stretching at the waist or create permanent crease lines at the hanger point. Store in a cool, dry place; rayon is more prone to mildew in humid conditions than synthetic fabrics.
Why the First Wash Matters Most
Most rayon shrinkage (usually 1–2%) happens in the very first wash, which is why it's already factored into sizing by most manufacturers. Hand washing that first wash in cold water specifically helps keep shrinkage within that expected, accounted-for range rather than losing extra size from rough handling.
Done right, a well-made rayon piece — like a wide-leg rayon palazzo — can hold its drape and colour for years. The fabric isn't fragile, it just responds badly to shortcuts: hot water, machine agitation, and high heat drying are really the only three things you need to avoid.
